How to Dress a Baby in Winter
During the cold winter months, it is important to keep your child cosy and warm, whether you’re inside or out. Follow these tips to ensure your baby stays comfortable and healthy during the winter season.
At Night
While you want to keep your child snug on cold winter nights it is important not to let them get too warm as overheating your baby is linked to an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), otherwise known as cot death. Buy a thermometer and make sure you keep the room at a comfortable temperature between 16-20°C. Baby Sleeping Bags are a great idea because it avoids the risk of your child burying themselves under the covers or kicking them off. On cold nights dress your baby in a 3.5 tog sleeping bag. These bags are warmly padded and suitable for use in colder winter weather and in room temperatures below 59 degrees fahernheit. You can also buy long sleeve sleeping bags to keep your little one extra cosy! To avoid overheating, keep their bed away from radiators and heaters. To check your baby’s temperature, feel their tummy or the back of their neck (your baby’s hands and feet will usually be cooler, which is normal so don’t worry). If your baby’s skin is hot or clammy, remove some layers.
During the day
It's important to keep your child warm and cosy throughout the day as well as during the night. Our sleeping bags with feet are a great solution for babies and toddlers who like to enjoy the comfort and cosiness of their sleeping bag, but also want the freedom to move about and walk around. With leg holes to pop their feet through they can stay warm and cosy on the move. We've also launched our NEW sleeping bags with feet and detachable sleeves for extra warmth. The sleeves are detachable with press studs so if your child is too warm or too cold, you can attatch or remove as required.
Traveling
Although it is tempting to dress your child in thicker clothes when traveling in cold weather, this should be avoided, especially if you are using a car seat. Also, a car can heat up quickly and you don’t want your little one to overheat. Remove hats, gloves and bulky coats. If you are using a buggy Slumbersac Travel Bags are a great idea. Available in 2.5 and 3.5 Tog these travel bags will ensure your little one is warm and cosy while you’re on the go!
Out and About
Your child will lose heat a lot more quickly than you do, so if you are out and about dress your child in one more layer than you would wear in cold conditions. Another good idea is to add a pram windscreen to help protect your baby’s sensitive skin. Babies can lose a lot of heat through their heads, so always put a hat on your baby in cold weather. If their hands are cold, put on some gloves too. Just remember to remove hats, gloves and any extra layers as soon as you go indoors so they don’t overheat.
